The big picture
Inflation is proving stickier than hoped, and central bankers are responding with a hawkish tilt. Fed Governor Waller explicitly left the door open to a hike if disinflation stalls, while the BoE's Pill argues against wait-and-see and prefers a higher Bank Rate. Their comments come as euro area producer prices rebound on energy costs, adding to the ECB's dilemma. The common thread is that major central banks are no longer confident that the last mile of disinflation is assured, keeping rate expectations sensitive to incoming data.
On the watchlist
- On 2026-09-10, the ECB's policy decision will show whether the recent inflation data, including the euro area PPI rise, prompts a rate hike.
- Watch the 10-year JGB yield: if it breaks above the level that would confirm Takata's view and signal further BOJ tightening.
- The US August CPI report, due 2026-09-13, will be the key test for Waller's hike threat, with core PCE at 3.05% still above target.
- Watch the Bank of England's September MPC meeting for any shift toward Pill's preferred rate of 4%.
