The RBI's overnight drain finally fills to target, anchoring the overnight rate at the reverse repo floor as banks bid above the notified amount for the first time in this cycle.

The big picture

India's liquidity management reached its intended setting: the RBI accepted ₹−298,537 crore in its one-day variable rate reverse repo against the notified amount, with banks bidding above target for the first time in this cycle, so the drain now anchors the overnight rate at the reverse repo floor rather than letting surplus liquidity press it lower. The same cash that would otherwise clear in the overnight segment at 5.29% is being parked at the reverse repo cut-off of 5.24%, and the standing deposit facility at 5% sets the floor beneath it. The Bank of Japan projects an October money-market funds shortage of −¥1.94trn, against −¥7.07trn a year earlier, with the Treasury funds and others factor at −¥1.89trn versus −¥6.85trn; the smaller drain leaves more current-account balances in the money market, and the swing in T-Bill net issuance/redemption to ¥2.77trn from −¥578bn shifts the collateral mix banks hold against those balances. Japan and Australia's memorandum directs financing through JBIC's Overseas Economic Security Arrangement Account and Export Finance Australia's National Interest Account, expanding contingent sovereign exposure to Indo-Pacific critical minerals and energy projects outside normal risk parameters, with either government able to discontinue on six months' written notice. FinCEN's proposed prohibition on transmitting funds involving any A7 Network Sub-Agent forces correspondent banks to screen and sever channels that processed a historical transaction volume in the trillions of roubles, extending the sanctions perimeter beyond OFAC's existing designations.

On the watchlist

  • The RBI's next one-day variable rate reverse repo auction: whether banks again bid above the notified amount, confirming the drain anchors the overnight rate at the reverse repo floor.
  • The Bank of Japan's November money-market funds projection: whether the shortage stays near October's −¥1.94trn or reverts toward the prior year's −¥7.07trn.
  • Fiji's next net international investment position release: whether the y/y deterioration of FJD 1.16bn widens further from the June reading of −FJD 17.86bn.
  • FinCEN's comment period on the A7 Network Sub-Agent proposal: whether the final rule keeps the prohibition on any covered financial institution transmitting funds involving the class.
  • The Stockholm Convention's COP13 in Panama City: whether the POPRC's recommendation to narrow acceptable PFOS purposes to leaf-cutting ant control and keep the fire-fighting foam exemption is adopted.
